Be the Change!

Leadership Workshop

March 19, 2011

10:00am - 3:00pm

A transformational day for middle & high school girls to learn tools for navigating through the many difficult choices found in adolescent life true to themselves, their values and each other as a community of peers. Three agencies join forces on this day to provide guidance, support and practical tools for teen girls to embody “being the change they wish to see in the world!”

Meet our facilitators:

Jeans_4_Justice_picSOCIAL CHANGE - CAN I MAKE A DIFFERENCE? Increasingly it is recognized that the solution to health and social justice problems requires that we engage bystanders - individuals who observe a problem and want to do something but don’t. It’s not uncommon for people to observe someone else’s behavior that may cause us to feel uncomfortable, yet then we don’t do anything about it.

In this session we will • Learn to identify the reasons why we don’t always actively intervene in problematic situations such as bullying, fighting or any unethical activity • Discuss the role that media, television, video games & social media play in our ability to create psychological distance to real life situations • Learn age appropriate & safe ways to evaluate situations & take action through direct & indirect strategies.

Jeans 4 Justice facilitators Lori Bednarchik & Jessica Johnson empower teens to recognize & participate in their lives and communities by increasing understanding of human dynamics & providing clear tools for age appropriate proactive participation in situations that cross their paths.

SELF CARE & LEADERSHIP - IS THERE A CONNECTION? Strategies for managing stress will be explored through fun activities including yoga, meditation and self reflection. Stephanie Armstrong Creator and founder of the Heart of Leadership, a San Diego-based movement to inspire and empower young women will join us for the day. An international speaker, facilitator, and coach, Stephanie's vision is that every young woman know the leader within; as an expression of her intuition, her values, and her strengths.

CREATING COMMUNITY - LET’S DO IT! Through trust building exercises, authentic communication & friend making opportunities girls will learn how to create a safe & supportive community. Leanne Tibiatowski, Program Director, will teach the elements of a safe space through a model that can be integrated into daily life. This concept is central to the Spirit of Leadership year-round program experience.
